Hello everyone, great site. I just bought a 1978 f250 4x4 on ebay in MI and to my surprise it came with a swapped in 460. The original sticker says it came with a 351M. I'm not sure what yr the engine is but the valve cover says meets or exceeds emissions for 1973. Driving it home I had an alternator belt go and to another suprise I couldn't just get an orginal belt cause the bracket was hand made so we had to buy various lengths and luckily the bracket had a slot in it for adjustment. When I got home the belt width had gone down by half the original size. Can I just order a mntg brkt from L&L or somewhere else and it will work? I have parked it and am trying to finish this truck so I can drive it. But when I just let it idle, it idles fast and when I turn it off it doesn't like to shut off and I am told that it has overheated. Not exactly sure cause the temp gauge doesn't work either. I looked for the connection for the temp sensor and the engine wiring harness doesn't have one that I can see, but there is a wire with no end connector that I think might be it, but not sure. I am changing the thermostat and coolant and need a fan shroud. Does anyone know the best place to get a fan shroud for a swapped in 460? I believe I bought a hack job. >:| I can go on forever but I will save those posts for later. But if anyone has any pics of a swapped in 460 It would be great to see.
Secondly, have you determined it should have a 351 by the VIN tag? The 460 was available back to 73, from what I can tell in the F250's and later in the 150's. Pick up an LMCtruck catalog for your year truck (73-79), they have all you usually need in there.
Thanks, and yes I am sure it was originally a 351M I found the original sticker w/the same vin# in the owners manual. I have an LMC catalog and as far as the alternator mtng bracket, they do not carry one. The fan shroud they have in there is for a 460 w/ac. This truck doesn't have ac, so I don't know if it is goin to work. I just want to know what everyone else has done and what works without too many problems.
It doesn't want to shut off because it's idled to fast. Idle it down and the dieseling will go away. The temp sensor wire is a single socket plug, "L" shaped. Should be around the distributor. Alternator bracket? try your local junkyards.
