make a whirl noise sounds like its dried. i shut it off and you can hear the whirl noise from the fuel pump still turning. i hear the same thing when i turn the key. is my fuel pump on its way out?
The pump's still running when the key is turned off?
That does sound like the noise a pump makes when it's headed south...but I'm curious as to why your pump would be running when the key is turned off...
its not staying on you can hear the fuel pump still kinda turning but its off.you know how you turn a fan off the blade still turns but stops. thats what this is doing.does it every ones in awhile when i shut the truck off you can hear the fuel pump still turning with a grind or a whirl noise.
Are you sure it's the fuel pump making the noise and not the fan clutch?
Try observing the fan while an assistant turns the key off, and see if it turns after the engine stops (along with the noise).
The fuel pump is so quiet(when it is working properly) you have to put your ear at the filler neck with the fuel cap removed and have someone turn the key switch "ON" just to be able to hear it run for 2 seconds at POWER ON. You should listen to lonerangerXLT and look for something other than the fuel pump. I did an Explorer fuel pump recently and you be glad if it's NOT the fuel pump. Not a good money maker.
You say "Nope its the tank". What proof do you have? So far you haven't provided it. Johnny Cockran said "If it doesn't fit you must acquit" and they did even though there was plenty of proof otherwise. Where is your proof? Your rejoinder does not merit a response. What is your experience level? If you're so sure "Its the tank" why haven't you already fixed the problem since there is a finite number of things in the tank that could cause the problem you describe. You might consider pulling out the wallet.
no need to act like a jerk man i know its the tank i had someone turn the key and it was the fuel pump. so theres my proof! it hasnt grind since. like i said no need to act like a jerk man. thats why i put this post in is to ask questions. im basicly asking if my fuel pump on my way out. which more likely is i dont know what more proof you want.
First thing you do is put a fuel pressure gauge on the schrader valve on the fuel rail. 30lb is the minimum. If it's close to the min. that's a good sign it's on the way out, especially if you have fuel starvation symptoms like random stalling, rough idle, etc. If your pressure is below 30lb. it's past time to replace the pump. You should already know this because you're having the symptoms I describe by the time your pressure is near or below 30lb. When I swap these pumps the pressure jumps to 65lb. most of the time and the driveability issues are immediately gone. Check your pressure. If it's at or near 30lb. drop the tank and replace the pump. Don't forget to replace the strainer too. So parts clerks won't tell you the strainer isn't always included with the pump on a Ford.
