If you are in 4 LOW, you will need to stop the truck, put it in neutral and press on the brake. Turn the selector to 2wd while still holding down the brake, and wait for the xfer case to disengage. It may take a little time (up to 2 minutes). It will not change unless its stopped, in neutral with the brake applied.

thanks to you too Cal,it was in 4 low,i never use 4 low but just went too far when turning the switch and figured no problem and went on up the part of my drive where 4x is needed ,now that all the snow is melting its made a mess of things

My F250 4WD did the same thing on me a couple of weeks ago. I was on the way to my mechanic to see if he could get it out of 4WD. I was at a red light and for some reason put it in neutral and it just slipped back into 2WD. I was as relieved as you. It's been fine since then also. Glad I could help.
