It's on my "new" 95 Ford Escort but the problem would be the same. The PO was apparently running the power steering pump without fluid since the remote reservoir is broken and empty. I have another P/S pump on the donor engine that I will use. I'm wondering if the steering rack could be damaged from this. It's a whole lot easier to replace with the engine out.
I bought the car not running so I can't tell what condition the steering system is in.
if there's more than 100k on present rack, i would change if you plan on keeping the rig
setting and being ran with no ATF in the system probably dried the R&P seals out. also not good for the bearings
it's a question of how much is your time and peace of mind worth
I think the car has over 200K miles on it. My instinct says to replace it while the motor is out but my wallet says to wait an see if it is okay. My wallet doesn't care that you have to remove the wheel and inner fender to slide it out.
lol i understand about walletes complaining way too much. just make sure the billls are all payed and the wifey's happy first before you drop the benjamins on your (as she might see it) "project car". ya know?
