Ignition Timing

I have set the ignition timing for the 351M in my 77 F150 4X4. I set it by removing the vacuum line from the distributor, and plugging the line. I set it to about 6-8 BTDC ( I have to have it smogged otherwise I would set it at 10-12). After I have set it, I re-installed the vacuum line to the distributor, and re-started the engine. With the vacuum line re-installed, the tiing should advance based on the idle speed, correct? Mine isn't, is this because of a faulty vacuum advance diaphragm, o0r something else??

Help!!

Thanks,
Rich

Yes your timing should advance at idle when you connect the vacuum line. The advance canister is either shot or stuck.

You can also check the vac advance unit by hooking it to a temporary full vac source. It can also be tested by a hand held vac pump or by "shadetree" lung power.

You may have a couple of vacuum switches in the line also. Depending on how it is hooked up they may be bad. Check your vacuum diagram sticker and a manual.

I replaced the vacuum advance yesterday with a spare I had. The diaphragm on the old one was toast. This seemed to fix the problem.
