I thought that the grain in the dash board was naturally dark. That was until I hit the dash with mother's protectant and a toothbrush. The grain is supposed to be the same color and hue as the rest of the dash and if your grain is darker then it's full of dirt.
What I did was working in small sections, about 6"x6", I sprayed my protectant and worked the brush in backwards/forwards and side to side. It came out pretty good and the more I cleaned, the dirtier everything else looked. Just thought I would share that wiping with your favorite cleaner is not enough to clean the dash.
