The system is only under pressure when the cap is on and the engine is hot. Engine cold, or cap off, no pressure. To flush the engine, remove the thermostat and run water thru the engine, top to bottom with a water hose.
You can buy flushes at your local auto parts, but according to radiator shops in my area, they are a waste of money. They will not touch the hard lime and other deposits that build up in the system. jd
