When it gets below 40 degrees, my Explorer begins to moan like it is in pain. This only happens under light or no acceleration. Applying a little gas makes the noise stop, sometimes all it takes is a tap on the accelerator.
Under load or above 45 mph it is fine. My mechanic can find nothing wrong and the vehicle refuses to moan when it is in for service.
I moved from Maryland to North Carolina so the moaning hasn't been that bad this winter, guess if I'd move to south Florida it wouldn't happen.
Anyone have any idea might be causing this moaning.
I had a very similar problem on my 4.0l Aerostar and it was indeed the IAC module. I have heard they can be cleaned, but I replaced mine and the "moaning moose in love" sound and occasional unexplained cold idle shut downs went away. The sound description goes to my mechanic who has seen a few of the IACs do this over the years and told me he has seen some motors refuse to stay started when the IAC went bad. It is very easy to replace.
