400 build advice

I have a 73 ranchero (4300 pounds), C6 (want an overdrive. thinking of gear vendors unit), dog leg rear with 3.00 and a 400 engine .030 over.
During the winter I think I am going to pull the motor and have the bottom end refreshed with new bearings, shot peened rods, and get it balanced. I would like to know what kind of power increase the aussie heads are worth and how well they flow when ported and stock.
Will I need to use a spacer plate with the aussie heads and a cleveland intake manifold?
Will my headers bolt up in the same location?
I am also going to have a detroit locker and 3.50's installed. Maybe a mild converter, also.
What cam would be good for this setup? This is my daily driver and I want to skip a second or two and go to the high 12's, of course faster is better.
It has to use pump gas and be good for many miles.
I am going to call machine shops around (san jose, ca) and hopefully find one reputable in building clevelands.
I was going to go the 460 route, but the $5,000+ it would take just didn't appeal to me very much.
Any information is welcome. Thanks.

there is a stock tranny with overdrive that is pretty much the same as a C6 but with OD added on. i think it's called "E4OD" or something - look in the tranny forum here.
what's a dogleg rear?

if you do a web search (try google) for "ford head flow data" you will find several web pages with data. for flow data, they're the same as regular US 2v heads, including stock, ported, and ported with larger valves. the shop i use charges $8/ea. to machine for bigger valves, plus the cost of the valve job, which you'll need anyway if you port the heads.

with the aussie heads you can use any intake that fits a normal 400. the performer and most others say they're for idle to 5500 rpm, and the weiand action-plus (8010?) says idle to 6000. the weiand and the performer both have an EGR version available. they're hard to find used, but the non-EGR ones are common on ebay. the holley street dominator/contender and the edelbrock torquemaster/streetmaster are single-plane intakes that are designed for the same rpm range. the holley has EGR built-in like a stock intake. so does the weiand (8310?). on the performer EGR you need an EGR plate.

from what i can tell, you might as well just use an intake that's made for the 400 unless you're using the big-port heads.

yes

looks like you need 400 - 410HP at the flywheel

>I was going to go the 460 route, but the $5,000+ it would

$5000 ??? is that a racing motor with aluminum heads?

dog leg rear is an open diff..no posi. When you give it power, one tire spins, like a dog lifts one leg and has one on the ground.
The 460 was with a PAW engine kit(1500) performer RPM heads(1700) and new oil pan (50), I already have roller rockers, dist..
The performer intake I have on my 400 has small ports compared to the opening of the heads. That is why I would use a cleveland intake, match the ports better and get some more power using a better designed manifold.

I've always heard the term 'peg leg' used for an open differential.

Actually you will need the spacers with the block and the Cleveland intake.

yes

The cam manufacturers have 5 levels of cams. look at level 3 for a good mix type cam, if you live in california, then look at 1 or 2.

you should not have to fret about gas.

thats a thing, i would let the shop aid you on picking out a cam.
