I found an IR 252 3/4" impact on craigslist that interests me cause I have had times where I wish I had a more powerful impact. IR states this impact has 750ftlbs reverse and 100-500ftlbs forward torque. Has anyone used this one or anyother 3/4" IR?
I've found some 1/2" impacts that put out the same torque, is there any difference between a 1/2" and 3/4" with the same rating other than size?
It will be fairly useless if you do not have enough CFM to drive it. If you look it up on their webpage I am willing to bet it takes 10-12 cfm (which is 1/4 load) and will require a 1/2" or larger hose.
Any cheap 120V 6CFM at 90 psi compressor with a 3/8 hose (which is really 1/4" inside at the connector) will barely turn it, never mind apply the 750 foot pounds.
I'm not worried about air, I got a 10cfm@90psi compressor, 3/8" line straight off the tank with 3/8" quick disconnect(has no check valve). I've sandblasted with this setup. My main question is: if you have a 1/2" and 3/4" impact with the same torque rating, is there any difference between them besides the anvil size?
Grainger lists a "Maximum Bolt Capacity" spec for each impact gun they sell. IR makes 1/2" impact guns with a MBC of 1/2" , 9/16" , 5/8" .... ;; 3/4" impacts' MBC's jump up to 1"
I thought it was an odd specification, thinking that the torque ratings is all that mattered. Apparently not.
My email to IR customer service was answered with only ... "The
body size of the anvil on the impacts should stay around the body size of
the bolt you are using it on."
One deciding factor might be that you would have to purchase 3/4" impact sockets or always operate the IW with a 3/4" to 1/2" adapter. I've been quite happy with my 1/2" Craftsman IW, but the Campbell-Hausfeld 1/2" IW I had before it could barely remove a lug nut. IMO a 3/4" IW is probably over-kill for most people, unless they work on really big things like tractor trailers or large farm equipment. But if you want it go for it, but rember..."it's not the size of the wrench that matters, but how you use it"
IR 2135, I would say hands down one of the most popular 1/2" impacts there is. I have the "little brother" 3/8 model also. Super light, and super powerful. When I worked alot with tires, and we got a lugnut someone cross threaded on 2 years ago, and now its permanantly rusted on, we would use the 2135, and either the nut would come loose, or it would bust the stud off.
If it were my choice, I would stick with 1/2 inch stuff, just because the 3/4 sockets can be expensive, and I believe you have a larger size assortment with 1/2". Unless you work on tractors and stuff, and need the 3/4. Also remember that the 3/4 can be quite a bit larger (and heavier) than the 1/2" guns. If you use it alot your arm will feel it!
