I'm the current owner for a 99 F250SD. I really liked the X when it came out and I still really do like them. Someday when I get to my older years (I'm only 22 now) I'd like to get something that will haul my toys along with my family (both of which I don't have yet) and do it effortlessly and comfortably.
Do you think they'll ever bring back the X or something other sort of large scale SUV like it?
Doubtful. The environmental wackos didn't like the X and Ford is too easily swayed by them.
I think the largest you will ever see is an Expedition EL.
NO. Eventually you might be able to haul your family and camping gear at 35 mpg average in your bio-diesel vespa w/optional family side car pulling a trailer rated for 50 lbs max. which will just about carry the wife's overnight bag.

Just buy an excursion and dont drive it. Their for when u start ur fam, then u can have one. Or u can do what i am doing and drive it all u want and then just restore it. My buddy just restored his dads for pick up truck last year. It was a 78 f250 with a 460. That thing is awesome and it looks and drives like it is brand new.
Well since I'm still in college and funds are tight...I think my best options would be to finish school...pay off my student loans the first 5-6 years after graduation...then buy a nice big ole diesel!

I'm labelled as an Engineering Aide where I work...but the actual job has nothing to do with the engineering side of it...it's all budget and financial and stuff like that.
I'm in college to be an Electronics Engineer...gonna make the big bucks someday.
Given current trends, the Excursion is probably the biggest that you will get.
There is no point in buying one now and preserving it, if that is your intention. Let someone else preserve it and absorb the depreciation, and then if you still want one in another 5-10 years once you have a family (by that point your question will be answered about whether or not Ford or anyone else has come out with a replacement), go find a pristine, low mileage example that has been meticulously maintained by someone else and buy it for a significantly less sum of money than you would now.
As an example, about a year and a half ago I decided I wanted to get a nice condition Jaguar XJS. I'd owned a bunch of not-so-nice ones previously that were frequently given to me for free and I overpaid. I searched around for a bit and found a mint condition '92 with 48,500 miles on it, always garage kept, never seen rain, snow, or salt, absolute perfect condition and also having a 5-speed manual conversion. I paid roughly for that car what a new bottom-of-the-line Kia would have cost me. Had I tried to buy the same car 5-10 years prior, it would have cost me probably close to double.
Let depreciation work for you. These things are going to continue to depreciate for a long time before they start heading back up again, if they ever do.
Alternately, when you get to the point when you have a family, you may decide that you want something else. Time is a funny thing, and what you think today may not be what you think in some years time.
Time changes every things and from an article I read about 2 weeks ago on yahoo it seems the gov't is moving in the direction of what you will be allowed to drive by the year 2015. The article spoke about the new Emissions policies or Europe in 5 -7 years and said not one car today other then hybrids will make the cut and be allowed on the roads. Scary thought to me when my gov't will limit my transportation options. I guess I will have to be a rebel and get one of the 25000 gal tanks and bury it in my back yard with diesel and drive as a rebel. "Mad Tim Beyond the Thunderdome". LOL

Exactly ,, that's why my 1st response would be driving a Vespa w/side car
The world is rapidly changing before our eyes and will change faster as oil prices continue to go up.

It would be a very sad day when a country that prides itself on personal freedom will fine and jail individuals based on the vehicle that they choose to drive, and furthermore then declare that vehicles must be taken off the road that were previously road legal. Europe is not interested in personal freedoms, it's about limitations of individuals for the "benefit" of the masses.
I can't see legislation like that flying in this country. It has been tried in limited numbers. California started a program some years back to buy up and destroy "gross polluters" in an effort to reduce air pollution, primarily cars from the 70s and earlier. This had many car enthusiasts outraged, because they tended to target the classics that we like to preserve and restore, and in some cases destroy beautiful, restored examples. I don't know if the program actually lasted very long, but there was quite an outrage, and these old cars still seem to be around. Point is, something like that would probably receive some sort of rebellion, and just generally not go over or work well. If nothing else, telling the country that EVERYONE will need to replace their vehicles with ones made within the 4 years would criple a good portion of society - especially if they have to buy them outright since their old cars will have to be scrapped as they are illegal to drive, too.
WOW...I certainly didn't mean for this to get all political and stuff. Some pretty interesting thoughts though. I say we make it through gun control first...meaning we carry what we want when we want with the proper permits of course and get them to quite "complaining" about that....and then we'll tackle the vehicular issues...
Thanks for all your responses....hope ya'll have a great weekend!
