almost everyone I have talked to says 28 spline. Someone said it could be 32 spline, but that is rare.
With the older mustangs you could generally look at the end of the axle shaft(take tire off and look at the end) square was one and triangle was the other, which is 28 and 32 I don't know.
If you find out how many splines can you post it as I have the same combination and I do not want to take the axle out to check.
There is no 32 spline for 9", only 28 & 31. My '73 with a 400/C6 didn't come with a 9". It looked more like 8.8" integral type. I swapped it for a 9 3/8" disc brake rear from a '76 wagon and installed a 3.70:1 posi 9" third member (28 spline).
My truck(below) has a 31 spliner in it. I know this cause the one is axle is sitting on the work bench. if you want i can go check and see if there is anything special about it so you can tell.

i asked about my '75, and was told most likely it was a 28 spline. it came from the factory with 3.89 gears and posi-trac, so chances are that if there was a 31-spline available, i would have it. on the other hand, it also had a 351W, so maybe the big-block ranchero's had 31-spline.
i've done some looking, and stock axles seem to be either 28 or 31 spline. racing parts also come in 33 spline and maybe 35 or higher - but no 32's...
ok, so maybe I got a number mixed up. I didn't feel like opening a catalog and wasn't sure if it was 31 or 32. You can get 32 spline axles, but you will be doing some grinding on some 35 spliners.
And, I keep hearing people say the 429 equipped cheros came with 31 spline axles, usually with numerically higher ratio gears.
The tag on the rearend should say. I don't care if there is not a tag, just pretend there is and you can have any setup you want.:7
