Need help with tires

OK OK this has been brought up beaten like a dead horse but I am still getting a hundred answers. I see alot of posts on here about tire size and most of them are lifted trucks, mine is bone stock only suspension mods is I have Rancho 9000x shocks. I am in need of new tires, I look on here and people say they running all sizes but dont know if they lifted, tire guy(s) tell me I can only run 265s and 275s and should go 265. I dont want 265's I would rather run a 275 but one guy told me to go with a 285 it a better tire, will 285's fit without a lift or mods? Hope someone can solve my ? cause i have a head ache from searching the 9000 tire posts!

I have an 02 X and it is bone stock for the suspension. I purchased it with 285 BF goodrich's on it. No issued with rubbing or anyhting on the tires. slightly mod described below. I think the 265 were standard on the X new. Stock rims also. It makes the vehicle look a little more aggressive to. Sory no pics yet.

My X is stock. I have 305/45/22 on it. It rubs only when I turn sharp right or left. I hardly ever have to turn that sharp. I have pics in my gallery.

First of all we need to kno if u have 4x4 or 4x2? Reason i ask is because 4x2 is two inchs shorter from the factory then a stock 4x4. Now if u have a 4x4, 285s will fit in the wheel well. Im not sure if 285s will fit in the wheel well of a 4x2. 275 and 285s will not rub with stock rims, so id go with 285s. The tires that rub with stock rims are 295's, 305's, 315's and up.

Using the cooper tires website for a reference, the 265/75R-16 is 31.6 inches high, and has a tread width of 7.8 inches. The 285/75R-16 is 32.6 inches high and the tread is 8.8 inches. Given the dimensions of both tires, there is only a difference of 1 inch in all dimensions. When you do the measurements from the rim, you cut the differences in half. Meaning, the distance from the bead of the tire to the tread face is only a half inch. Likewise, the tread is one inch wider, which means it's a half inch wider on each side. Clearence shouldn't be any problem if it's a 4X4. Hope this helps.

Do you lose towing capabilities by going to 285's vs 265's? That would be my concern, the taller tire would help a little with gas mileage but I believe it would make it down shift a little more when towing.

Not necessarily, but a lot are. If it's not factory specs, they don't know. Put the 285's on and have fun. John

Ok now that we got tire size out of the way, I currently have bfg all terrains on my truck and was going to get those again, then had someone talking me into the bfg mud tires any info on this!? I live in an area that gets a good amount of snow, dont do much in the line of off roading just to go pull my idiot friends out of lakes, seasonal roads and sand or mud

BFG A/T's are good tires. I run Cooper Discoverer ATR's and I think they are really good tires for highway use, they're great in the snow too. I couldn't believe how good they are. I wouldn't hesitate to get them again. I will say though, if you do much off road use, I would go with a little more aggressive tire.

285's ARE the "correct" stock tires.

Ford switched to the silly little ones for reasons that have
nothing to do with non-impaired people using quality tires.

BFG AT KO's are one of the best tires on the market, except
they may not last as long as you would want. 30-40 K is good.

BFG MT are wonderful tires off road, and work reasonably well
on pavement, they are noisier and don't last as long as the already
somewhat short-lived AT's.

If you drive almost exclusively off-road, get the MT. Otherwise get the
AT's, as long as the $$ per number of miles equation fits your budget.

Tire shops are all over the place about what they can/will/won't/don't install.

My local Ford dealership (used to) put 315/75/16 BFG's on the stock rims with a 4" lift all the time, still does on the SD P/U's.

Allen tires won't put bigger than 295's on the stock rims.

America's will also put the 315's on (my favorite cuz I drive a LOT of off road)

I went with Toyo Open Country M/T's on my Ex. Quieter than the BF's and in my case the price was the same. Really good in snow and mud and on ice. There are pics in my gallery.
