I am contemplating a future upgrade for my 73 chero(4300 lbs of green tank) with 400/c6 3.50 gears.
My dilemna is whether to port my current 2V heads, just cleaning the intake and fixing the exhaust as much as i can, or getting a pair of 4V's and cleaning the exhaust of those.
My compression ratio is 9.1:1 and I don't know if the 4V's will be able to make enough torque to move my heavy car..er,truck in normal driving and stop and go traffic. What does everyone think about doing the swap on the 400? I do not know what intake manifold or cam I would use, but I want more than what my current comp 268 high energy has to offer.
Also, does anyone know if there are any headers that would fit the 4V heads on the taller deck block in my chassis?
I already have the hooker super comps for the 2v's and I like the increase in power they gave over the stock manifolds. They also sound wicked when uncorked...so I am told
Any input is appreciated.

Early 400s and 351Cs don't appear to have these restrictions. Cleveland 2V heads will raise the compression +.2.
"How to build horsepower" hand book V1 states raising compression from 9:1 to 10:1 increases HP by only 1.7%.
This is an exellent book.

i think a good 400 with 4V heads will make enough power. with the right cam, you will be fine. you could alwaus stroke to 4.15 inch for the lost torque. its like 15-65 pounds, not a lot.
I just built the combo you are talking about. I have plenty of torque. I also put this in a 73 Ranchero. Right now I am having a big problem with traction. I'm looking for some gears and tires, but right now I'm limited on funds. If you use the 351C 4v heads you will have to use a 351C 4v intake. To use a Cleveland intake on a 400 you will need a set of adapter plates, they are avaible from Summit racing for about $100. Don't worry its no big deal at all. In my engine I have flat top pistons, 351c 4v heads, edelbrock performer intake, intake spacers, edelbrock cam, (i forgot the specs) edelbrock 600 cfm carb, (I need more like a 750, but i got a good deal on it), all MSD ignition, and some other goodies. I love shocking people by how fast it is. NO one ever thinks my car is fast till they race me or look under my hood. It's pretty funny. I wasnt sure about this engine till now. Build it and you wont be dissappointed. If you have any qustions about anything you can e-mail me at Musosaso1@***.net.
I used the stock crank and rods, ARP rod bolts, Keith Black hyperutectic pistons (they are 351C pistons I had a my machine shop make a special rod bushing...it only cost a few more bucks) edelbrock perofomer cam, stock rocker arms, balanced, high volume oil pump, thats all I can think of. I thihk the 341C 4v heads made a big difference. it makes all its power by about 4800-5000 rpm's.
