same old problem, different dude.

I have a '98 f-150 w/ 4.6L triton motor. I have been driving w/CEL for more than 2 years. With diagnostic comp. I've come up with codes 171, 174 (Bank 1 and bank 2 lean). I changed fuel filter, air filter, O2 sensors, PCV fitting (the little 90 degree job), cleaned the MAF, and checked for other vac leaks. After all of this I took it to a shop and was told that the MAF had low voltage and needed to be replaced. I could not afford this at the time, so never changed it. They got it to pass emissions for me, and it has passed the year after as well. The truck runs well, but I would like to fix the problem once and for all. Is it possible for the truck to go this long with a failing MAF? Should I just change it? are there other possibilities? What tips can you give and do I need to find a special tool to replace the MAF?

the maf is probably the true problem but you could try running some fuel injector cleaner through it..plugged up injector?..i dont really have a clue besides the maf..you can always buy an aftermarket one like jets or summit racings...

thanks pony, I'll try that next. Some good news is that I got it through emissions again, but I really just want it fixed.

How are you cleaning the MAF? Do you have a K&N, Airhog, type oiled filter? If you pull the negative cable and put it back on after 30 or so minutes, do you still get a CEL?
