Smile 86 I6 w/ 4spd dog

this truck is my dd, and the gas mileage is killing me. on the highway, in 4th gear, the rpms run around 3 grand and she sounds like she's gonna blow. i'm thinking of a 5spd swap to help with the gas mileage and such. my thougts are: it's 2wd, so no off-roading or anything, decent bit of highway driving, very little towing or hauling heavy loads, so no real reason to have the granny geared tranny in the truck, when i could be getting a little better mileage and smoother running truck.
so now that i've typed the world's longest incomplete sentence, any recommendations as to which 5 spds will fit:
86 150, 2wd, 300 I6, long bed, bone stock (basically), with 4spd currently, 81000 actual miles.
help please?
thanks in advance.

First up are the Ford OD four speeds. Miserable between 2nd and 3rd, but cheap. The top shifted model might be the one for your. It was OEM in your truck.

Scroll down to the Mazda boxes. Integral bell, you must have a hydraulic clutch, which I think you do. (fixed your firewall yet where it flexes near the clutch master?) Car-like first, OD 5th. Not the strongest, but keep it full of oil and away you go.

Further is the ZF. Low first, OD 5th, maybe some gaps... Again, integral bell, juice clutch.

An '86 still have a 9" diff with the drop out carrier? If so, the cheap way out here for 2wd is to plop in a 3.0 rear gear, or even taller and make good use of that low first and drop your highway revs back to 2000.

Rear end could be a cheaper and easier swap, either a gear change or find a axle in
the junkyard with the gearing you want and maybe a locker!! You could put a newer
auto tranny in there if you wanted to spend the money, Using a comp controlled trans
and the controller botcs) will give you control of the lock up, shift points and can make a big difference in your mpg(may take a while to make up the cash outlay)
