Another Tranny problem
I have a 1992 F150 351 4X4. I've had a hard banging shift into 2nd and 3rd for awhile. You can sometimes baby it into a better shift. I've had the tranny flushed twice with no change. It has now started to not shift down unless you come to a full stop. You can jump on it, back off all you want and it won't shift down without a manual shift. On an easy take off from a stop it will start moving and then drop RPM and act like its going to die. Feather the throttle and it'll go again. Sometimes this happens in first gear and sometimes in second. Other than these little idiosynchrocies it runs great!
Any suggestions?

Probably needs to be dropped and the valve body cleaned out and inspected for wear
on the solenoids and either cleaned up or replaced. Did the PO put in a shift kit maybe
or have you ever submerged it in water, and not flushed it right away? If you have bigger tires that will call for sooner fluid changes. A temp gauge would be a wise investment!! I use my mit vac pump to pull out a half quart to a full quart of trans fluid
every oilchange, it may be a bit ocd but it makes me feel better to know I have some fresh fluid and additives flowing around in there, It is cheap insurance to and only takes a few minutes. I have a hose as long as the dip stick and pull the fluid out of the dip stick tube. http://www.transmissionpartsusa.com/...ive_s/9154.htm
Their additives are the only that I would put in my trans and might be worth a shot
to dump some in maybe 2 bottles of that atf protectant. If you go to those quick lubes
for a swap they don't usually get all of it and then to make up for it they put what
amounts to a red dye and some additives in after to make the fluid look better, I do
not trust that. Even pulling the fluid out through the dip stick a gallon at a time at
home would be better then going to those places. Just make the mity vac connect to
a strong juice jug(1/2 or full gallon) and it takes some time.
Blue Beast - Great info and links. Thanks!
With this info and checking the MLPS as advised on the older F150 forum I should be in good shape in no time.
