i have a 1983 ford f150 4x4
when i put it in 4 wheel drive the front axel shafts spin but tire doesnt move
im guessin hubs or maybe just the lockouts
i dont knwo the difference between the two but i guess there is one
wich hub or lock out would be an OEM replacement for the stock one?
like how many splines?
Just take it apart and see what's going on. It's going to be hard to guess what's wrong with it without looking at it. But you are correct, it does sound like something out at the hub.
Had the same issue with my '77. Simple replacement of the locking hubs took care of it. Passenger side was trashed and a pain to get out, drivers side slid out easy as pie. Only cost about $70.00 at Checkers for a set of Mile Markers. Got my '86 back again and haven't tried the 4wd yet. Hope there's no issues, but it's an easy task if there are.
When IU had my '83 stepside F-150 I had problems breaking the frot axle all the time. The factory hubs were broke when I got it so I bought some Warn lockiung hubs for $90 or so. Never broke those. What I always broke was on the passenger side inner shaft to intermediate shaft, the splines that connect the two. I stripped those splines several times. Very frustrating how weak the D44 TTB is. Those shafts are just too small, not enough splines on them.
After breaking it the second time I'd always carry a complete spare shaft for the passenger side when I'd go in the woods. It was a pain to change that shaft though. Another nifty trick if you ever break a lockout hub is to jam a screwdriver or other nice piece of metal in the u-joint in the axle shaft. It will prevent that axle shaft from spinning and only apply power to the wheel with the good hub.
