bogs down on acceleration

another problem. i have a 83 f150 with 302. ill be driving down the road and slowly accelerating and itll be fine. but if i give it a lot of gas it bogs down and then after a few seconds itll boost forward a little then drop down again. also its hard as hell to get it running in the morning. it also stalls in park when i give it a lot of gas. i was thinking timing and was messing around with that, but i dont have a timing light nor the money to buy one with, so i cant get too accurate.

It could be the accelerator pump in the carb. Pull the aircleaner off, and with the engine off, look down the carb throat while you push back on on the throttle. You should see two strong streams of fuel pour into the engine. If you don't, then your pump is bad in the carb.

i checked the accelerator pump. the gas came out in both jets but the streams werent steady and when i held the throttle wide open, no gas came out.
so if the acclerator pump was working id see 2 strong steady streams of gas, right?

You'll only see streams *while you're actively opening the throttle* and possibly for a short amount of time at the end of the stroke. It's not like you can open it up (floor the accelerator) and two streams of gas will continually pour down the throat of the carb, it doesn't work that way. It's a mechanically-actuated pump, and it pumps *as you push the gas pedal to the floor* (or do it with your hand). Or am I confused?

You should get a nice even shot when you open the throttle plates quickly. By the time you get to WOT you won't see anything, you are already at the end of the pumps travel.

The accelerator pump is just to get you moving and it gives it an initial shot in the *** until the primary jets take over.

Strong and steady streams are what you want. Any delay or dribbling is not good. If you are not getting much fuel in the engine when you do this, this will also explain the hard starting when cold, since not much fuel would be entering the engine to prime it to start in the morning.

I haven't installed mine yet so I can't answer your question. I get 7-11 MPG 1981 F350 4X4 400 cid 2V 4.10 gears T18 4-speed, I use it mainly for hauling firewood.

The primary jets in a 4bbl carb are smaller than the jets in a 2bbl carb, so in theory you can see better mileage, but it's so hard to not get into the secondaries sometimes!

One more thing, if you go to a 4bbl carb, you'll have to get a new intake for that truck as well. You can't bolt a 4bbl carb onto the exsisting manifold so that'll make the cost go up.
