Which Hub Seal?
I'm not sure where to post this so I'll just put it here.
I am in the process of gathering part info for the front ball joint/seal job when I noticed that my hub seal on my 02 truck is different than a friend of mines hub seal on his 03 truck. We both have the 7.3 and leaf spring front end but his inner axle hub seal has a metal plate that covers the seal and looks to be in perfect shape and mine looks trashed. We both have the same amount of miles on them also. I also looked at three more o3 and 04 trucks in the parking lot a my work and all the metal plate covered seal look perfect. The part number for the 02 seal is F81Z3254CB and the part number for the 03 is 3C3Z3254CA. Can anyone help deterimine if I can use the 03 seal on my 02? Thanks .<!-- / message --><!-- sig -->

Here you go. Scroll down until you see the knuckle seal discussion. They don't cite the P/Ns but the picture looks like what you described.. Looks like a PITA requiring special tools.

The ones with the metal band are the only ones I've ever used, so I know they will fit. I'd get the ones with the metal, as I think they're more durable in the long run.
I also tried building the seal installer tool and had horrible luck with it. I destroyed 2 seals before finally going to the dealer and they let me use their tools. At $30 per seal, that was an expensive shot at doing it myself. Others have had much better luck with it though.
