1995 F250 Temp Problems

I have a 1995 F250 4x4 with a 460. The temp gauge is not reading correctly. It will go to hot and stay there for a while it then will go down to the normal range for a while and then will go back to hot. sometimes it simply acts normal. I have changed the thermostate, and temp sending unit. The gauge still occasionally has this erratic problem. The only thing I have left is the gauge. How hard is that to change out. Is there another temp sensor on the motor. The one I changed was the one next to the thermostate at the front of the engine on the manifold. I traced the wire back and it appears to run into a second unit that screws into the manifold. Is this a 2nd temp sensor? Any help would be appreciated.

Your 460 has two temperature sensors. One is for the gage and the second is for the computer.

The gage sensor is located on the front part of the intake manifold just behind the distributor. This sensor has just one wire connected to it. The computer's sensor has at least 2 wires connected to it.

My '95 had the same problem with varying temperature indications. I used an IR temperature gun (a tool that all of us really need to add to our collection) and verified that the actual coolant temperature at the sensor was 195 even though the gage read differently. After that I just drove the truck and ceased worrying about the gage reading.

I thought that may be the case. I traced the wire coming from the front sensor by the distributor and followed it to a second one what appeared to be a sensor at the rear of the manifold. This sensor had a yellow top cap on it. It had the same single wire plugged into the top as the front sensor. Which sensor does the dash gauge read? As for worrring about a cool engine, well I also changed the thermostate and I know it is working becasue of feeling the recirc line. I would like to know if that back sensor is in fact the 2nd temp sensor though. I went to the local auto store and had them pull up the parts fisch. It only showed one sensor and that was the one I replaced so I do not know if this second sensor is in fact another temp sensor. Have others folks had this problem? Thanks
