problems installing new distributor-please help

does anyone know a trick to line up the hex oil pin that goes into the bottom of the distributor? after a couple of hours trying it is kinda getting frustrating if you know what i mean. the pin keeps laying to the side.

thanks for your help

It shouldn't do that. It must not be in the oil pump. If somebody didn't put the little clip on the shaft to hold it in the pump, everytime you pull the dist, the shaft will pull out of the pump. I would get a long 1/4" drive extension and a the proper socket(5/16 or 3/8-I can't remember). Try to get the socket on the end of the shaft so you can manuever it so it stands straight up, and then twist it around till you feel it fall in the oil pump. Now the tricky part. Pull the socket off the shaft without the shaft pulling out of the pump. It should stand up straight if it's in the pump. Try to put the dist in. If it just won't go in the last little bit, take it back out and turn the oil pump shaft just a little and try again. If you have to pull the dist again, expect to go through all of this again.

ok, i pulled the shaft out of the pump (i guess it wasnt clipped in huh?) and there was a washer with some teeth that must have been used to center the shaft at the top. well that washer was bent and the teeth were worn (or torn) off of it. is it necessary to replace that washer if i don't have to? it's amazing how much of a mess this turned into. anyway thanks for your help.

The shaft must have been seized into your distributor so that when you pulled the distributor the shaft came back up with it and deformed the retainer washer. This is a common occurrence. You are lucky you did not loose the shaft into the pan. If it falls into the pan you will have to pull the pan.

It does not help with your problem at the moment in your case, but it is a good idea to coat the end of the shaft with anti-seize so that it does not happen again. Put a little AS in the end of the distributor shaft also. When you pull the distributor next time it may pull the shaft with it anyway with the retaining washer gone.
