Replacing Rear Shocks

I have an '05 Scab XLT 4x4 5.4L with 17,800 mi. Still have the factory shocks on but I think the rears are starting to go. How can I tell for sure if they are wearing out? There is no leakage but they can be depressed easily between my hands. Fronts are still good, checked them when I installed the AS 2" level kit. Second question, I know it would be best to replace all 4 at once but is there a draw back to replacing only the rears? I do load the truck occasionally, normally 500 - 700 lbs but have been up to 1500 lbs.
Thanks for your help.

Replace them it is a cheap thing and it has everything to do with the handling of the
vehicle. If you can cycle it pretty easy then you should replace them all. It is a safety
issue since uncontrolled wheel movements will allow the rear to fish tail or pogo and slide around, The fronts will reduce you braking power since with no damping the front
will dip down more when you press on the brakes instead of slowing the vehicle, I saw
the braking increase in my truck and it felt like I had done a brake job when I put in
new shocks.

Agreed with what you're saying, I am however shocked that he needs to replace shocks with so few miles on the truck. I replaced my original shocks last year when I bought the truck at 100K....mind you they were overdue for sure. But 17K seems awfully early to me!

Yeah, it seems early to me also. I left the ones on my '99 F150 to 120,000 mi and my mechanic buddy just laughed when he took them off. These on the '05 probably have some life left but am noticing the rear end "skips" when I hit a bump especially on a curve. Doesn't slide, just feels loose.
