Hello. New to the forum and hoping I could get some advice. I have a 1998 F150 4.6 Windsor motor, 130k miles, runs great, no smoking, knocking or excessive oil consumption. The head gasket(s) starting leaking combustion into the coolant. I looked at the trruck and the book and decided I would prefer to pull the motor and do the job on an engine stand. At first I figured I'd pull the heads, send them out for pressure checking and possible resurface, and back together. I also considered maybe its smart to do a timing chain set and lifters just on general princeable. Then I starting to think about a reman engine(long block) for among other reasons the miminal downtime vs. repairing. Ford has one for about $2900. I spoke to them, they are not done by Ford but rather by a rebuilder they use. I have seen other brands, Marshall in particular, for about $2100. I dont mind spending the money and the idea of the job being done in 2-3 days is very appealing. So my question is does anyone have any experiance with differant brands of remans, or any other advice. I wont consider a junkyard motor. Thankyou.,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,lenny
I'd go with the Ford rebuild. A company called Hesco re manufactures all kinds of Ford parts. They are here in town, a friend of mine works there. I got a 5.0 thru them for my Dad's 89 F150 and it has had no issues. Plus you should get a warranty with it.
I just bought one from Promar Engines in New Jersey.... very nice quality work done to this engine! Free shipping, no up-front core charge and 3 yr. unlimited mileage warranty, but the warranty is only good if you had a certified tech install it.
