I have a 79 f150 with a 460. I drove it up here to my girlfriends house on december 23rd, it ran fine the whole way, about a 35 minute drive from my house. I backed it into the spot where i park and shut it off. The next morning, i went out to start it so it could warm up, it started up and ran about 3 minutes, then it blew a puff out of the carb and quit, and it hasnt started since. all the plugs and wires are good, has a new cap and rotor, new control module. I can not figure this thing out, i have been racking my brain and everyone elses with questions trying to figure this out. My dad mentioned checking the distributor to make sure the gear hadnt broken, checked it, its good. Im out of ideas, can anyone help me? thanks
When my timming was off, I got backfire;s through the carb. It took me awhile to figure out what was wrong, because I had to set the timming repeatedly. Turned out the bearings in the distributor shaft had siezed, and the distributor would turn it place....
Sounds like it ran out of gas. Do you have an electric or mechanical fuel pump. Did you check for fuel in the carb. Does the fuel pump run (electric) when the key is on and you are cranking the engine? Prime the carb by pouring a kittle gas down the throttle bores and see if it starts. You need 3 thing for the motor to run; fuel, spark and air. Remove one and no start and run.
I have all 3. I got it running today, i took the distributor out and looked at the pickup stator, a wire was burned into right against the side of it, so i took it to the parts store, a pickup would have been about 25 dollars after tax, so i spent the extra 25 and bought a whole distributor. It started up, and ran, then it died. I came in to let it sit a few minutes, thinking it was flooded. I went back out and it wouldnt start again...
uh yea, keep in mind the truck has been here since dec 23, which leaves me 2 month to work on it, and also leaves 2 months for the wire to burn while im working on it.

Sounds like your ignition coil and/or module box may have a short(since you did have spark).
If you decide to get a new distributor, consider our custom curved Duraspark Distributor built with our new Full Length Oil Impregnated Bronze Bushing. The full length bushing improves timing stability and spark scatter. If stock appearance is not an issue, take a look at our one piece D.U.I. Distributor. Whether you choose the Duraspark or the D.U.I., we curve each on a distributor machine based on your engine combination. Please see them at:
yes i thought about that too, or a short anywhere in between... Thats what i hate about electronics lol, theres alot of wire between the dist and the module, when the weather here straightens out i am gonna hit it again, i dont have a roof over it and i am just gettin over the flu, my girlfriend gripes at me because even when im down i still try to get out and work on stuff lol, thanks for the help guys
