cold start engine knock

Hey guys,

I have an 02 F250 SD 4X4 V10 with only 40K miles on it. Lately when I cold start the engine, it sounds like the bottom end is knocking until the correct oil pressure is reached along with total lubrication. If I turn the engine over just a few cranks without actually starting the engine first, it doesn't happen. Any ideas? I do have an extended warranty, 7 years or 100K miles.

Thanks....

Are you using 5w30 or 5w20? If not give that a try

Make sure it's actually a knock instead of a "slap". The "slap" is just the nature of the beast on these modular engines.

Are you using an aftermarket oil filter w/out the drain back valve ? My '99 did the same thing until I went back to using the Ford FL820 oil filter and it quit.

thanks for responding you guys. The last oil change I did, I used 5W-20W oil with a Fram oil filter. I didn't know about the drain back valve, is that inside the Ford oil filter?

Any filter that says it replaces an FL-820S has an anti-drainback valve.

The one thing I noticed when I first changed the oil on my '01 was that the owner's manual calls for an FL-820S - not a plain regular FL-820

The "S" is for silicone anti-drainback valve. The Fram XG and TG series have them, the regular PH doesn't.

I've been using Fram for going on 25 years now - never an issue. My brother-in-law sells them wholesale to boat mechanics in the tri-state area, and never had a warranty claim. The rest of the filters he sells, he has. Go figure.

Anyway...

Ron, if you pump water up a hill, and turn the pump off and leave the valves open, does the water flow back downhill?

Cut a Fram apart and compare it to a Wix or fleetguard. That'll tell the tale.
