What wheels were being used in the '60s on the high performance cars and trucks. I want to keep my truck mostly period correct looking but am having trouble finding 5x5.5 lug pattern wheels. I am looking at the American Torq Thrust D and the original Cragar SS. Are there any other options? Pics anyone? I powder coated a ford steel wheel black and then put a baby moon on it but it looked too '50s car like to me. Any ideas?
there were no '60s performance truck wheels they were white 15" wheels on F-100s
the fancy one had full hub caps
some did replace with Cragars, keystone classics and chrome reverse
Ford did not offer any styled steel (which includes the white spoke type) or styled aluminum wheels on F Series trucks until model year 1977 and then only on F100/150's & Bronco's.
The following were first introduced in 1978.
D8TZ-1015-C .. Styled Steel Wheel ~ 15 x 6 ~ White Spoke Type.
D8TZ-1015-D .. Styled Steel Wheel ~ 15 x 8 ~ White Spoke Type
The white spoke wheels and any other styled steel or aluminum wheels used before 1977 on F100/150's are not genuine Ford.
Only the passenger cars & Ranchero's offered styled wheels prior to 1977.
I grew up in the 60's and my neighbor had a '65 short bed that everyone loved. He switched back and forth between Cragar SS and Ansen Sprints on it. I just bought a set of Ansen Sprints for my unibody because of the way his truck "etched" itself into my brain all those years ago.

First use of styled wheels: 1965 Mustang
Ford didn't make a lot of fuss for wheels from '60s through '70s in the '50 pickups did come with color matched wheels
my stock styled wheels consisted of a few rattle cans of a different color (normall black)
I think dodge was the first I can remember putting stylish wheel on trucks in the late '60s
I have a 64 shortbed lowered 429/c6 project that I'm going to run the vintage style torq thrusts on. 10's in the back and 8's in the front. American Racing makes 5 on 5.5's. My opinion, they're what make old Ford's look their best. I do like some of the other vintage aluminum mag styles, but defintaely like the torq thrust the best on 60's Fords.
