I was at a car/truck show in Palm Desert Ca. All proceeds went to the Dr. George foundation for cancer. Over 900 entrants. It was a good turnout. Any ways, The drive to the show was about 50 miles each way. The ride there was great, mostly down hill going from 2000 feet down to about 600 feet. After the show I was heading home and doing about 55 mph. my truck pop'ed almost like a misfire just once then was fine Or so I thought, a short distants later it did it again, I pulled over to see and nothing looked loose so I made sure all plug wires were on good and drove the remaining 20 miles home with no problems. I have original 292 with points. Could the points be going bad? I have not pulled off cap to check yet. If not this then what else could it be? It might sound petty but I need information from the guru's.
Robert I have to agree with Garbz about the timing. I drove my old 60 223 I-6 for 30 miles with the popping happening every few miles until it finally got to the point I could hear it 3-4 times a minute. I tore the engine down and found the timing was off due to wear. Since I had it apart that far I figured I look at the valves. Well lets just say I spent $600 to rebuild the head because I wouldn't pull over to tow the truck home. I'm not trying to make it seem worse then it is but you might have a burned valve seat if the distributor parts check out ok.
Got lucky. It seems that two plug wires were'nt seeting very well on the distributer cap. It would take them a little time but with vibration they would inch their way up thus causing "POP" A quick fix Along test drive and she's back to normal. Thanks guys
