I know this has been talked about a lot. I am considering converting my 66 2wd short wide to a 4wd. I can't find short 77-79 wheelbase 4wd pickups around here. I have found longs and bronco's but nothing short. I was offered a good deal on a 1980 short 4wd pickup. Question is how difficult would it be use this and put my body on it? Other option is to lengthen the bronco or shorten the lwb trucks?
converting your truck to 4x4 using an '80 just isn't as common. i've got a '64 that is an original 2wd, but a previous owner swapped International 4x4 axles under there and converted it. hell, if you could swap int'l gear under there, i'm sure with some minor fabricating you could find axles to swap under your current frame. of course you could always shorten a 77-79, but thats just as much fab. as swapping axles and steering. just have to consider your options
I say swap the running gear. Since your body is pre bump/dent side, I think you would be better off. I will take time and money, but the FTE users here will help you through.
Also post this in the 4x4 - offroad forum. Some guys are putting monster running gear under their trucks, so I am sure they can help you out.
I have posted some out of usually ideas their way and they have been very helpful. The FTE offroad bunch are probably the best as far as helping first timers.
