I dont know, I found the picture online at http://www.kwequipment.com/Atomic_4.html

Atomic Four has always been a Boat engine. About a year before my boat sank. I had a guy trade me a 1949 diesel Atomic Four, for my Gas. He said he was going to put it into a race car... Dunno if he ever did, didn't really care. He made me an offer I couldn't refuse. The engine, plus he would plumb all the fuel lines, and install a stainless 200 liter tank for a straight trade. The Diesel pushed me along at 11 knots.. Some a**hole sabotaged 18 boats in the marina I lived at around Christmas 1997, 8 boats sank Mine included. I was on the mainland for christmas, and got a frantic phone call from the marina owner, on Dec 24th. My insurance was basic, so I didnt get a hell of alot out of it.

The first diesel engines were indeed used in boats...German boats. Rudolf Diesel was the inventor.

The largest engine installed in a US passenger car was the Locomobile 4 cylinder T head of 866 (!!) cid. The engine originally made 40 HP when introduced around 1910. When discontinued after 1929, it was up to 90 HP.

4 cylinder T head = one bank of two cylinders..then a space, and one more bank of 2 cylinders.

T heads were very popular engines once, with many of the leading manufacturers using them.

Some T-head engines were cast en bloc, some were cast with the cylinder portion bolting to a separate crankcase. The heads were removable.

All cylinder heads are removable, right? Not so, for example the Hispano-Suiza's straight 8 engine was cast in two pieces. The block and head were one piece, the crankcase another. Working on this type of engine is a royal PITA!

The Mercedes 3 pointed "star" hood ornament...is actually three arrows.

One points up = Air, one points down in one direction = Land, one points down in another direction = Sea.

3 Mercedes engines....Land, Sea, and Air...all diesels for three different applications. Ornament began circa 1910.
