retard timing.
ok, i just pulled out all my EGR crap from my 351m. i know i have to retard the timing or it will ping. shoot, it pings now when it gets warm and i hit the throttle. but my trick is i don't have a timing gun. so... can i just turn it back a lil bit without a gun or should i go and buy a gun. and any clues what i should set it to? and while i have you here, my intake gasket. i hear lots of horror storries about the back rubbler gasket. some people use a bead of gasket sealer and make their own. should i do that or use the rubber seal? i know i have to replace it now, i had someone ask me if my truck was on fire it was smoking so bad.

Set the timing by ear. It's too bad though, because retarding the timing is going to kill some power and gas mileage too.
You can use the rubber gaskets if you glue them on with that yellow trim adhesive. Or you can use a thick bead of silicon without the gaskets.
