Hello
Thanks in advance.
Welcome to the free for all of our humble little forum INDY. That price doesn't seem outrageous if its been well kept. In reality I think any price the seller and buyer are both happy with is a good price. An OASIS report is like a CARFAX report. Alot of times if you post your serial number here someone will do it for free You will have the power required but I'd be nervous about stopping power. The Ex is built on a F-250 frame with lighter springs than a F-250. I'd suggest significant upgrades at the very least or better yet a lighter trailer.
Welcome to the forums!
I'm up in Fort Wayne...are you from Indy?
Anyway...11,000# behind an Ex...is IMO pushing things a bit. As western star points out...the ROOT of the Ex's issues stems directly from those LIGHTER springs that Ford put in.
Here's some of the suggested upgrades you will be facing...none by them selves is outrageous...but all costs are parts only...I'm assuming you would install the parts...none of which is very difficult at all...the most challenging would be the rear spring swap...
1) Rear spring swap to F250/350 springs OR a RoadMaster Active Suspension. Either of these options stiffens up the rear springs. Costs $300-400
2) If you have no rear sway bar...you need to add a Hellwig. Cost ~$200
3) Set of Bilstein shocks. Cost ~$250-270 from shockwarehouse.com or eshocks.com
4) Set of E range LT tires on your Ex...it 'may' have D range...NOT GOOD for your towing.
The thing you can NOT swap is the rear receiver...it WILL be your WEAK LINK. If you look at the 'rating' you will find a rating of either 1000# or 1250# in WD mode. NEITHER of which will be sufficient for an 11,000# TT to tow with much stability...You should strive for ~13% of the weight to be tongue. That means 1430# tongue!!! Even a 12% tongue would be 1320#!
There are NO aftermarket receiver mfgs for Ex receivers. Has to do with the fact that Ford markets the rear receiver as a 'Blocker-Beam' and the aftermarket guys don't want to get into the potential liability issues if a small vehicle runs up under the Ex with THEIR hitch on it and there are injuries...
So the rear receiver is your downfall. There is a mfg out in Cali that sells them...BUT he has to install it!
So while I LOVE the interior space the Ex provides...it needs some help in making it a stout TV...which I have made mine into with the above mods...
You may also want to look at a high end hitch like a Hensley or ProPride. These hitches do everything that is claimed and make for an incredibly stable towing experience.
The ProPride can be had for hundreds less than a Hensley...PM me if interested in more details on pricing breaks I've read about...or any other questions.
If I didn't like the interior space so much...the pickemup makes for a much more stable TV all around...the longer wheelbase and stiffer springs give the pickup that edge...
But the Ex cannot be beat for passenger comfort...but $$$ has to be spent to shore up the suspension weaknesses...but that rear receiver still is left untouched!
Welcome again to the forum...
