Unhappy ...help...running ...then dies..???

I was driving my 87 a couple weeks ago and it died about an hour of running time at a stop light. It acted like it was out of fuel , I figured the fuel guage went as it read 3/4 tank. I flagged a buddy down after about 30 minutes to run and get me 5 gallons to get her going. He returned and after dumping the fuel in she fired right up ( made sure it was diesel). I drove her the last mile home and parked it in the garage. Went to start it several days later, figured I would go fill her up and she started and ran for a minute or so and died and I could not get her to start again. I thought maybe the pick up is broken and it still needs more fuel. I put another 5 gallons in today, she fired right up and I let her run for about 10 minutes, brought the RPM'S up a couple times and then it died and would not start. I checked all my return lines and no leaking as I replaced them last year.Does this sound like the fuel pump? I thought maybe the filter at first but it didn't hesitate to rev up and didn't seem to be starving for fuel. I was thinking keep it simple before jumping to fuel pump but I'm at a loss.It is all stock....Is there anything I can check or is it time to put the electric Holley read pump on?

Somewhere on this site I've seen specs for how much the fuel pump is supposed to put out. Most mechanical fuel pumps I've had go bad had leakage from the pump. Something you might check is that the wire to the injection pump is secure, if it is in bad shape, it may be cutting out your ip.

Where is that wire located and where does it most commonly break?

The fuel shut off solenoid wire terminal is on the front drivers side.
