I have a 79 Ford 1-Ton Wrecker with a 400 cu in engine that I'm putting a timing chain on. I want my valve timing straight up, not 4 degrees retarded. Does anybody know what part # I can order from AZ NAPA CarQuest or O'Riley's? I don't want to spend $75...... maybe $35.
In the set that I want, does the dot on the cam gear allign with the gear tooth or valley?
get one from a early pre 73 model chain and gear set.go to the autoparts store and get one from the early 73,and compare it to the one you got.it should have the dot lined up with the keyway, straight up timing.if nessasary, one from a 71 400 will do for you.i ordered that for the last 3 motors i did and worked for me since the 1st one was the 71 400 out of a ltd.
The dot on the crank gear should line up with the dead center of a tooth. You can check it with a straight-edge across the gear, if you don't trust your eyeball calibration. Alignment dots on retarded timing sets are offset slightly from the center of the tooth.
magna19 is basically right about which application to ask for. Any '70-'72 351C or '71-'72 400 timing set should do it, but check the crank gear like I said. Some parts manufacturers have built retarded cam timing into their OEM-replacement sets even for earlier applications.
