Hi guys, I have a 1994 F150 4x2 with a 302 motor. my oil pressure gauge(idiot light) has always been around the N or O of normal. this week while driving to do my student teaching it dropped to below the N and for several days now it hovers right below the N while driving down the road. I drive to go student teach about 80 miles a day so it kinda worried me. I use 10-30W Mobile 1 synthetic oil and have used this since I got that truck with 98,000 miles on it. The truck now has about 166,000. The oil guage somtimes doesn't even register till I'm going down the road for 5 minutes. then it will all of a sudden work and go to below the just below the N. I searched this topic but I just didn't know if it matters since I'm running synthetic. By the way i put a quart of Lucas in my oil when I do my oil change. Think its just the Idiot gauge being junk, or what/???
Pick up a cheap manual guage and screw it in the sending unit hole. This will tell you for sure. If your engine is not knocking, then most likely it is either the sending unit or the guage.

ditto
I've had my test gauge for years... decades even..
seems to be running fine as usual. even got 19.5 mpg on it yesterday lol. but yeah that would suck if i damaged the motor.
If you were actually running with as low a pressure as your guage shows, you would hear some serious knocking that even an aftermarket sterio could not drown out. I suspect the sending unit. These guages are just idiot lights on steriods so you may want to get an aftermarket mechanical guage and set it up. Peace of mind is a wonderful thing.
Yeah, I am having a new sending unit put in on Saturday. My oil pressure actually came back up to the O or Normal and that kinda rules out the oil pump to me since it fluctuated. gonna prob get an aftermarket gauge if i can find a descent place to mount it
Yeah, my mechanic here at school is gonna check it on saturday with a real gauge and then if its real low hes gonna replace the sending unit. He believes that since the pressure came back up on the dumby gauge for awhile that its either the gauge of the sending unit. idk how the pump could work better somedays than others you know??
