Valve stems.
I was checking my wife's Escape this morning, something I do every week or so, to make sure the tire pressure is fine, etc.
I noticed her valve stems were dry rotted and ready to snap off. One was real bad.
We got them fixed under the road hazard warranty (second set of tires) but they were new just 15,000 miles ago.
We put in metal ones now.
I can't imagine what would happen if a valve stem broke during driving but it probably wouldn't be cool.
Anyways, just a heads up. I never paid much attention to valve stems before but I will now!
Actually, this usually results in a small leak, and usually only when sitting still (And I've seen them torn almost all the way around!). When you're driving, centrifugal force pushes the stem harder against the wheel, which can seal up the leak... temporarily.
