Parts Prices

I recently had an "Ignition Control Module" installed on my truck and the price
of the part was about $175.00 !!
It was a Motorcraft module, but when I called NAPA or O'Reillys that off brands at about $45.00!
Is it normal for the difference in prices and is it better to go with the high end part ??

My mechanic gets his parts from a distributor that sells only to businesses and not the public, but that does seem to be the dealership price.

Don't let Numberdummy see this, he will read you the riot act!

Ford dealers are suppose to use MSRP for parts, but prices will vary from dealer to dealer - Just like McDonalds - prices will vary.
Ford parts dealers can charge what ever they like for parts - Tell me you wouldn't - Most people - individuals -will never see the price of a part.
Most repair shops that use OEM parts will put it right into the cost of the repair. Parts counter walk ins - like us - are a rare breed at dealers. With all that there are some parts that are OEM musts - and most of it should be electrical parts - knock offs just don't make the cut. IMO.

I do get some parts from Checker's that are actual parts that are supplied to FORD - Bosch O2 sensors and some EGR valves - that had the actual Ford PN on it.

I did buy an fuel level sending unit from Ford at 78.00!
Do what you gotta do, Ever have to buy parts from a Harley dealer? you need to leave an arm.

I've used parts from NAPA for years and have had little to no trouble with them. (Though advance and auto zone usually have crap.) Most of the repair shops around here use parts from places like NAPA/Carquest (no O'Reillys out here but I've dealt with them in other states.) That being said, yes there will be pieces that you have to go to the dealer for thats inevitable, but I don't subscribe to the "Motorcraft or Nothing" mantra that some on here have. I'll use it where I can but simply having "Motorcraft" stamped on it isn't an instant pass to it being a flawless part.

Most of us here use Motorcraft simply because of 1) the quality standards & 2) lots aftermarket parts are reverse engineered with out any help or specifications from ford (particularly electronics like an ICM). So they don't work as well or as long as the OEM part.

As far as the cost issue goes you can order from one of the two sponsors Y2K or Direct Ford Parts, which are dealership parts counters. If you have the time & just can't wait to have it shipped. But chances are your local dealer will have to order them as well, so its a toss up.

Most of us aren't going to beat some one up for going to NAPA or else where if you gotta' have it now or there is a cost issue. we just lean toward Original Equipment as a hedge against future problems.

By the way as an example I spent $82 on my ICM from one of the sponsors that I mentioned.

I have no problem putting in NAPA, Kragen or Autozone parts. ICM at Kragen is $38 with 1 year warranty, and about $100 with lifetime warranty. A part like that takes 10 minutes (1-2 beers) to install. I would never buy a Motorcraft part at 5 times the price of aftermarket, especially if it is an easily installed part. If the part fails, good luck getting a free replacement at your local Ford stealership!

My mechanics reasoning is that the work he has done is under warranty, so he uses better quality parts and it lessens the chance of a future problem with his work.

I can understand that line of thinking, but would have used a NAPA part if I had done it myself.
