transmission problem
i have a 2000 ford ranger with 2.3 four cyl. Its a 4 speed auto. You will be driving along, and the speedometer stops working suddenly, and the transmission acts like it goes into neutral. If you try to shift it manually, it wont go past second gear. This doesnt happen every time, but at random. Anyone have any ideas?

Ok, a 2000 should not have a 4 speed auto. It should be equipped with the 5 speed auto. When was the last time you replaced your tranny fluid? Low fluid or old bad fluid will cause problems, and if ignored, will destroy the transmission. Get new fluid and while the pan is off, look at the material. If there is a lot of gunk or metal, then the transmission may have already worn excessively.
It could also be a solenoid on its way out, fairly easy to fix if that is the case.
