351w=400?

HEy this may sound really stupid, but by replacing crank and pistons with 400 cank and pistons in a late 70's windsor block, will i be making a 400? Or is it just the Modified and Cleveland that this applies to?

just the 351M, there is a lot of work (money) involved to do this in a 351C.

I think the 1969 351W had a 3.00 main . but the windsor doesn't have as much room in the bottom end as the 351m/400 so there will be some clearancing issues to deal with.I know when my buddy build his 409 windsor stroker with cleveland 4v heads he had to grind down his oil pump shaft to miss the crank throw.. So yes it will work ... but it will cost a few extra bucks to make it.

351w=400?

Years ago people modified 400 cranks for 351W strokers. Now there are so many companies who sell 351W stroker cranks, it's not cost effective.

Speedomotive offers a 351W 4.17" stroke crank for $264 deliverd.

Shazam, could you measure the 351C and 400 blocks again? When I finally checked my blocks, I found the 400 block had an extra 3/8" from the bottom of the cylinder to the oil pan surface.

Post 351w=400?

If You can put a 400 Crank in a 351W, Can You put a 351W Crank in a 400 M Block? There are After market 4340 Steel Stroker Cranks for 351W And I would like to Know if I can put on In my 400M. I 've seen them with 4.100" Stroke. It Seems I heard the front end of the 351W crank is shorter than the 400. Would this prevent the swap? I'm just starting to research all the different 400 stroker - crank, piston & rod combos and options. I really just need to stomp on some Alcohol-Blower Chevy Boys.

I researched the 351W stroker cranks into the 400 block for a long time. The snout is shorter and the timing gear needs a spacer. Those are easy to fix.

The problem was the rod journal size and length. The aftermarket 351W cranks use a 2.1" journal on the stroker cranks. I never found any reasonably priced rods long enough for the 400 deck height. Only custom made ones starting at about $800.

I did find one place that advertised 351W stroker cranks up to 4.5" with 2.310 rod journals.

made by Proline.

It's been at least 3 months with no pricing info. If anyone knows anything about these cranks, please let me know.

So, you have a spacer whittled out of aluminum? What about the shorter snout, how do you deal with that?

A 2.2" rod journal would open up a whole world of affordable 6.7/6.8 rods. I guess you could recut the journals for the 240-6 rod (2.122 x 6.8" with undersize bearings?), or the /6 rod (2.187" x 6.7" for the 225 rod, 7" for the 198 rod).

"So, you have a spacer whittled out of aluminum? What about the shorter snout, how do you deal with that?"

No, I haven't whittled any metal since buying the lathe and milling machine. Aluminum is easy to machine, but it's easier to make a timing gear spacer out of an old timing gear or use the M-19009-A341 spacer @ $22.

The snout is only about 3/4" shorter. If there is a clearance issue with the balancer or belt pulley alignment problems, I would make a spacer and use a longer bolt.

"A 2.2" rod journal would open up a whole world of affordable 6.7/6.8 rods. I guess you could recut the journals for the 240-6 rod (2.122 x 6.8" with undersize bearings?), or the /6 rod (2.187" x 6.7" for the 225 rod, 7" for the 198 rod)."

That would be great. Unfortunately 351W blocks are only 9.5", so rod length isn't a problem. They don't consider 351M/400 applications.

"Flatlander advertising undeliverable cranks? Perish the thought!"

I know what you mean. The 2.310" rod journal is probably a misprint. I'd like to verify with Proline but I haven't found any contact sources on the web.
