steering box going out???

04 F-350 4x4 126k

I replaced the drag link a few days ago because it seemed a bit worn out on the joints.....when the drag link was disconnected fromt the pitman arm, I noticed when I grabbed the pitman arm and shook it around, that there was a bit of movement. I cant tell how much movement visually, I can only tell by sound...a slight clunking sound. The sound seemed to come more so from the steering shaft/column, than from the immediate pitman arm area...though slight movement was at the pitman area. Once the new drag link was bolted up in place, I tried moving the pitman arm, and it was solid...no movement or noise...Is this normal?? Am I heading for an even lighter wallet????

It sounds normal, but don't take anything lightly. Check all the mounting bolts on the steering box to make sure things are tight. Evaluate your steering carefully for any dead spots or loose steering.
