98 ranger 4x4 issue

my 4x4 seems to either work, or not. it seems like after the vehicle has warmed up for a considerable amount of time it will work, but when its cold forget it. and when its cold if i turn the switch to 4 high it will light up but it is not in, but if i turn it 4 low i hear a relay click but the light doesnt change to 4 low. is there moisture somewhere when it is cold? any help is appreciated.

There should be a sticky on this, 98 - 2000 ranger used the pulse vacume system that is very problematic. Tellico 4x4 sells a set of AVM manual hubs for these years of ranger to do away with the problem. 99% of the time it's the pulse hubs, 1% of the time it's the electric shift motor on the T-case. There's also a way to loc the pulse hubs in where they stayed locked in. I'm sure someone will post the article. This question gets ask about twice a week on the 98 - 2000 4x4 rangers. I would just get the AVM manual hubs and do away with the pulse hubs and save a little gas as well.

Yeah, all it takes is a little snow before the 4x4 problems start rearing thier ugly heads Thats the only time a lot of guy's will even touch the 4x4 ****. If you want to the 4x4 to work properly, you need to use it often and keep theat shift motor working and not let it get gummed up, dirty and sticky as they tend to get from non-use. Then there's the PVH system that just plain sucks on the 98 - 2000 ranger that needs to be replaced with a set of manual hubs to kill that beast once and for all.

i got the manuals for my 99 best thing i ever did, if u want to lock ur pvhs, you dont need to take them apart, just take of the vacuum hoses on each sides, put something over the holes, then take the hubs off and just push the center thing in them till they lock
