Is it possible to strip the hubs and/or front axle shaft to a point where 4x4 works in all forward gears, but not in reverse? Thats not to say it never works in reverse, but after I turn the wheels, or if I give it a little bit too much power, I hear a slam and then no more 4x4. My best guess is, I need new hub assemblies... now.
What do you have for hubs? the factory automatic hubs will unlock then lock when shifting from forward to reverse and reverse back to forward. so it should be possible to wreck them somehow to the point they only work forward. If this is the case just replace them with either new auto units (less recomended) or with manual units from warn, mile-mile marker etc. (more recomended) If you do any moderate to heavy four wheeling manuals are far superior to the stock automatics.
I don't think the clips being missing would cause that exact problem, though it is a possibility. I would take the hubs apart and look for dammage. I have seen some very cruddy looking hubs when they are taken apart, lots of rust from water contamination and dirt. They could just be really gummed up. Clean them well with brake cleaner or in a parts washer and reinstall them with a very very thin layer of grease. It doesn't take much just a thin film too much will cause sticking too.
I also wonder if the chain in your transfer case is slipping. If all is well in your hubs no dammage, rust etc. you may have more serious problems in your case. Hopefully this isn't the case but just an option I am throwing out there.
That was my first thought, but I can hear either the axle shaft spinning inside the inner hub, or the inner hub spinning inside the outer hub. I just changed out the fluid in the t-case too. I'm afraid whatever the problem is, its going to have to wait until the weather warms because while it is tore apart I can change out the pinion seal and front diff. fluid. I can't imagine how water would have gotten inside, or any foreign matter for that matter.
From the sounds of it your hubs are probably chewed up either on the splines to the axle shaft or the dogs that lock the hub together when engaged. I doubt if this problem lies in your diff, but if you have leaky seals they definately need changing.
Let us know what you find when you get to it in the spring.
