I recently dropped and cleaned out the oil pan because the truck had been sitting a while and I need to clean out the moisture. I changed the oil pump and oil pump shaft. I should have compared the new oil pump shaft with the old to discover that the new one was longer but I did not discover this until I tried to put the distributor in and it would not seat all the way. I pulled the shaft out but lost the ring in the engine. It sounded like it landed on the bottom of the oil pan.
I still have the old oil pump shaft. I removed the ring and it fit without any problems.
Engine 351M
Here are my questions.
1. What does the ring on the shaft do?
2. What type of damage would the ring do to the engine?
3. Is the ring heavy enough to sit on the bottom?
I would like to avoid having to remove the oil pan again.
Any comments or suggestions would be great.
Thanks in advance
Well............the ring is supposed to prevent you from pulling the shaft out! Ooops! It's not very heavy so it will float around in the pan some. It wont get sucked up in the oil pickup but could get caught up in the crank/rods. I guess you could stick a big ole speaker magnet on the bottom of the pan to hold it down. Just pull it off for oil changes.
stock oil screens have a BIG hole in them under the metal band across it,why,we don't know.the clip will definately get sucked to the screen.i have personal experience with a lockwasher that didn't belong inside the engine stopping the oil pump and making a twisted oil pump shaft souvenir and 3 piece dist. gear roll pin.i would try to pull it over to the drain hole w/a wire or by any means possible, tap on the pan while draining or whatever.if you get it to the hole and it's too big, pull it,bend it,fold it.maybe the speaker magnet idea will pull it to the hole.then you have the problem of no clip on your shaft if you ever have to pull your dist.
