Do a compression check. The tester is $10-30 depending on quality and where you buy it. Loss of power, a studdering sensation, a put put put in the exhaust note. There probably are other symptoms, but I cant think of them at the moment. Buy the tester, google "compression test" and run the test, report the results.

Another quick and dirty test would be to install a vacuum gauge on the intake manifold. Any burnt/sticky/duff valve would show up as a steady "jump up and down" on the gauge while it's just doing the idle thing. In any event, this would be a great time for the compression test with a leak down test to figure out the exact details of what's going on.
