Tune up time. 5.0

96 bronco EB 5.0

What all is included in a tune-up on this engine? and about what would be the cost for parts? Are the Plugs hard to get to on this engine on a scale 1-10, 10 being the hardest?

Thanks

I know the pollution pump is in the way of the 1-4 cylinders. The worst one out of all of them is #4 especially if you have headers. The others are easy, a socket with a short extension and a wrench and you will be good to go. They are easy on the 5.8 should be easier on a 5.0. as for a typical tune up:
Spark Plugs- go motocraft. had a guy put autolite in his V10 and ran like crap, changed them and it's running like a top again. I use copper based because they don't foul as easy as platinums, but platinums will last longer, as for fuel consumption I'm not so sure.

Plug Wires- try not to go with cheap ones. Just because a house brand wire is lifetime warranty doesn't mean it's a good wire. Alot of times lifetime warranty means how many times do you want to change in your lifetime.

Cap and Rotor- Again quality is paramount. Look for a cap that has brass contacts not aluminum. The brass contacts will be better for longevity.

PCV valve-can get clogged with oil and will fail overtime, best to replace it.

Fuel filter- if you can't remember when the last time it was changed it's a good idea. A dirty fuel filter can cause strain on your pump and burn it out faster. Fuel filters are especially important now being that gas isn't what it used to be. quality is lower than ever.

Also a grease of all your suspension would be recommended, as well as U-joints. I would put a bottle of fuel injector cleaner in too. The three that I have had best luck with are RXP gas kicker is great, and lucas is awesome, and seafoam is great.
as for cost it really depends on where you get them, and what quality of stuff you get. I would go into a autoparts store and have them run you a quote on this stuff, thats the best way to do it. As for my credentials in this area, I have been doing mechanics work for 12 years, and I am a parts store assistant manager and have been doing parts for over 2 years now. I have never had anyone come back on my quality items unless they were ready to do a tune up again. I have however had a few come back with wires not firing, and contacts worn on caps, because they bought the less expensive stuff.

Being that you are located in Houston, I am an O-reilly employee, and think our stuff is the best you can get. Also if you find stuff that is cheaper than ours the guys have no problem matching prices as long as it can be verified. As for the quality, for ignition parts the quality is borg-warner. the store brand is mpi, Which is Masterpro Ignition. I believe the cap is a c194, the rotor is a d214. If you go to buy brog warner they will have two, the C194 is what borg-warner calls there select ignition(it has brass contacts), where the C194p is a select brand(it has aluminum contacts.) Hope these part numbers will help you. Don't know the part numbers on the wires or plugs for I have a 5.8 and I think they may be different.
