I own both, I trail ride the diesel, it does fine for that, but, it ain't a mudder.
Yes you can make up the wheel speed with gears, but, once you lose rpm and come off boost, you are TOAST then, as you are over geared, and the engine can't turn the tires off the turbo due to being under geared; and spin them to clean.
Sure, diesels have big torque down low, but, that isn't everything, there's a reason serious pullers run 5-6K rpm and more. Just ask anyone who drives a rig, if you don't keep that engine in it's power band you're done, exactly the same as a gasser, gas engines tend to have a much wider one though.
very true, so i guess a dedicated mudder diesel it could be done, if all effects were takin into consideration. I just thought it would be cool to combine to things i happen to like alot, Mud and diesels. Maybe ill figure something out. Sounds like people havent really pushed that envelope much. Maybe something i could try, once i start makin the big money.
dont get me wrong i know of a few deisals that are just knarly.....one with prob. 700hp1300tq 66 r2's 5tons that is pretty awsome and another witht eh 66"terras and prob. the knarliest deisal in the world....but they arn't like having 50mph wheelspeed either.....
Knarliest diesel in the world.
Whateva.
This here is the knarliest diesel in the world whipper-snappers.
(Thats a local truck, fitted with 2 12l 92 series 2-stroke 'troits, 2 roots blowers, 4 turbo's and giggle gas)
I would like to order 1 for my 95, HA yea second the motion for a drool moticon. I think that might be a lil over kill for my aplication. But pretty bad none the less.
hey wait ive seen video of that truck, its a bandag tire company, or something similar isnt it. That is one sweet truck. They have a specialy built haul truck for it. Like a mix between a flat bed and bob-tail rig, i guess. Either way, its pretty awesome truck.
why would wheeling a diesel be so epensive compared to a gasser?
What breaks stuff?
Torque breaks stuff.
To get the same power (with mudders you want power, to get energy and momentum, not torque) with a diesel you need a lot more torque, which will require a lot stronger drivetrain. All this means more weight, which means more dollars in suspension, more dollars in tires to keep it afloat etc.
(not to mention to get anywhere near the same hp, will cost a lot more $$$ to begin with)
As for trails, yes they are much more suited (thier low down torque means they will climb much better than a gasser)
aghrhwhrhg <--- sound of drooling, since there are no drool emoticons. That is crazy, i would love to see that in person and take a good look at it. Have yall seen the 8 cylinder cummins, with six turbo's?
There are few better sounding engines than a 92series Detroit, coupled with the blower gear whine, and turbo whine and the induction howl it makes, it shakes the ground under full throttle.
It is a drag race semi, built almost 30 years ago. Its a 903ci cummins (14.8l) The 6 turbos are staged in parellel, Meaning there are 3 turbo's per bank. It featuers an onboard compressed-air system thats used to spool the turbo's.
The article also says the truck hasn't been dynoed and the turbo's never properly sized for the set up, but its estimated to make between 1200 to 2000hp and could lift the front wheel of the semi a good foot off the ground and powered down the 1/4 at over 100 mph. Rig was retired after near fatal acident when tranny EXPLODED on a drag launch.
Thats all i really got from the article, it was only one page, kinda sad, ill see if i cant dig up anything on the interent.
