My engine is ticking all the time. It has plenty of oil 10w40 valvoline maxlife. Do these engines have hydraulic lifters or are they solid? A friend of mine said he used to service these trucks back in the day and he would put about a cup of auto trans fluid in the engine. He said most time it would quiet down at the instant he poured it in. Well I tryed it and it didnt work. How do I tell if its exhaust or valve components?
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 05-Jan-03 AT 08:56 PM (EST)]Chris, try to hone in on where the noise is coming from. One trick is to take a length of hose, either vacuum or fuel hose, hold one end to your ear and move the other end around the engine. Works real good on exhaust leaks. Another trick is to take a long ratchet extension, wrap your thumb over the end, then stick your thumb knuckle in your ear. Then touch the other end of the extension to various places on the engine. Works good on internal noises, especially alternator bearings.

Orangeford, take a quick look at the small casting plugs on the cylinder heads. The driver's side is at the back, the passenger side is toward the front of the head. These plugs frequently rust out and cause an exhaust leak.
