we have 2 of them in s model attenuator trucks.
i don't know much about the trucks, they were bought at auction as cab chassis for $1500 each.
with 3 state contracts, we needed 30 attenuator trucks within a 3 month period, so we were buying anything that ran and looked halfway decent to build on.
They are repowered if there are 5.9 Cummins in them.
S-Series had gas engines available up through 1984 and International 6.9, 7.3 & 9.0 liter or DT-360 & DT466 and maybe a Caterpillar V8, depending on model year, till the S-Series went away around 1988-89.
A late model 12 valve being nothing compared to a turbo IDI
I can tell you that T444Es, a long with the 5.9 are not very good at all in medium duty trucks, espeically school busses, with the T444s' seeming to be weaker.
Not really, the Cummins has more HP, and they bother have similar peak torque and peak HP RPMs. The onyl thing I can think of is that alot of IDIs had 4spped manuals, or C6s, so they were geared fairly high, letting them take on loads well.
What about the recent reliability issues? I know the 7.3 kick *** up and down the length and breadth but by the time I can afford it, the 7.3s will be too expensive and rare.
the 7.3 IDIs are generally reliable, yhe 7.3 PSDs as well. Pretty much every cummins up until 07 has been reliable. Cummins has run into problems with the DPF, but not the engine itself with the 6.7, and even then, its because of incorrect programming causing the DPF to plug sometimes.

agreed. i feel the 5.9 is a pathetic slug compared with the T444E.
take a F650, put a 2000 gallon tack oil distribution tank on the back of it, and put a 5.9 with a 5 speed trans and 2 speed rear in it.
you will take your life in your hands pulling out into traffic with it.
take the same truck, but with a 7.3 powerstroke engine, which is the same thing as the T444E, and put a straight 5 speed or 6 speed trans in it, and you will have no problems pulling out in traffic.
