Hello from the Philippines!
A year ago I rescued a 1997 Explorer Limited from the crusher in Tokyo, Japan where the previous owner was going to pay about Y100,000 (just under US$1,000) to have it disposed of.
I saw him trundling up the hill to the yard and managed to get to him before he went in. It was a nice truck with then 100,000kms on the odometer (about 66,000 miles). I ended up paying him about Y35,000 (about $300) for the truck--I guess I could have haggled to get it free but my conscience would bother me.
I rolled the thing into a 20 foot container and shipped the truck to Subic Bay in the Philippines. 45 days later it was in Manila where I had all the brake rotors replaced, calipers rebuilt, and new Motorcraft pads put in. I also replaced the spark plugs with NGK Iridiums.
About 2,000 miles on, the A/C compressor died along with the refrigerant dryer. I had these converted to use tropical grade Nippon Denso units. At the same time, I replaced the snake belt, tensioner, and water pump (I was in there anyway).
Three months into ownership of my very first American vehicle, I chucked out the JBL stereo and CD player for a Lanzar DVD/MP3/Ipod head unit, LCD monitor, and Lanzar mp3 cd changer. 2k watts of power amp went in and that space at the back for a subwoofer got a proper transducer with capacitors.
Another three months later, the air ride seemed to be going hinkey so I turned it off, dumped the rear leaf springs from a new set from ARB in australia and put in new ARB Old Man Emu Nitrocharger shocks all around. After adjusting the front torsion bars to maximum ride height, I replaced the General rubber with tropical grade 265-70R x 16 Michelin LTXs.
Man I love this truck!! Its my daily driver. Sure I get about 11 mpg in Manila's crazy traffic jams and I have to endure the "eye" of people who worry about global warming and Al Gore but is it ever so nice to drive! Nothng beats an SUV with a big understressed American motor! So far, the only thing I had to replace was the IAC after it started whistling me a symphony four weeks ago.
Ford never sold this unit in the Philippines but I just found out that most of the stuff for the Sport Trac (which is sold here) does work on it.

Than is an interesting story! Sure sounds like you got it for a cheap price and that it only needed some minor work. Be sure and post a picture of it in your gallery and feel free to post in the tech forums. Oh yes, you will also want to check out your area chapter to: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/forum141/
