4th Down And 4 To Go

I started changing out plugs again on 98150 5.4. I sure do enjoy doing them. this is only my second time, the motor is at 170k miles. Anyhow, i changed out the driver side bank, and fired the motor up to check for miss after i was done. No miss found, I used a blow gun to clean out the crud that gets down in the head and didnt have any problems pulling out the plugs. When i started the truck up i noticed a decent amount of ticking from the engine. Is it possible the a rock small enought to not hang up the socket but wedged in tight enough between the head and plug to not be blown out get into the motor? The noise let up after about 10 seconds, maybe a little less. I couldnt pinpoint the sound location in time. Has anyone ever had this happen to them?

Used green loc-tite (bearing retainer) on the plug threads. The next person changing out these plugs better have the truck chained down before he trys to pull them out.

I did pull the fuel rail off. This noise was much more metallicy in sound than the tapping noise of the injector. I have a mach1 and those injectors are pretty loud, espically since there is no cooling fan running off the motor. I am pretty sure that the injectors werent making that noise. It sounded too heavy.

Well, if it ain't making the noise any more I'd say something fell in there and blew out the exhaust when you fired it up. I've had it happen before....even the smallest little piece sounds like a bowling ball in a 55-galon barrel when its bouncing around in a running engine. If it was big it would've done some damage on the way out. I guess if it'd make you feel better you could tear the exhaust off and see what it was.
